The Four Selves Oracle by Toni Savory & Carrie Paris

I had to take my time with this oracle deck, because it is genuinely so complex that I had to sit with it for quite a while in order to work out how it related to me and how I could use it with my own spiritual practices. Over the course of the past few months (yes, months,) I’ve come to the conclusion that this deck is probably too complicated for where I am in my path, but will likely appeal to others more attuned to their metaphysical needs.

That said, I think if you’re just using The Four Selves Oracle the way you use other oracle decks, tho with a focus on interiority, this could fit neatly into your collection. The cards are GORGEOUS, with Carrie Paris’ evocative artwork doing a brilliant job of visualizing the concepts of each of these 36 cards. Each card illustrates an aspect of the various parts of self and how we connect to the environment both within us and without, in an effort to help the reader integrate what can feel like conflict and chaos into a unified whole. While this is a prescriptive deck, it is not prognosticative (and if you’re looking for advice on anything but the betterment of your spirit, then this is probably not the deck to use.)

If you are, however, looking for a better way to center and understand yourself, then Toni Savory’s methods here are highly intriguing. She posits that the self is split into four parts: the physical, conscious, subconscious and superconscious. While the first three are commonly accessed by all people, the last is the one that readers must strive to develop, as it’s the self that, in this system, allows us to connect to a higher power and perspective. The accompanying book goes into the relationships between these four selves in depth before discussing the cards and how to use them.

The part about spreads is where things start getting tricky. I loved the Daily Mantras and found them very useful. I started having trouble pulling together coherent messages, however, when I had to start using more then three cards, as with the Four Selves Check-In Spread above. The guidebook is pretty clear about what each of the cards means in each non-Superconscious position: I just had a tough time interpreting what they meant for me in combination. I think that I am perhaps not well-enough acquainted with the underlying concepts to truly decipher what message the cards had for me.

This only got worse the more complicated the spreads became. I will freely admit to never having been able to make sense of Tarot readings that use whole decks, tho I have certainly tried (and very much love Yoshi Yoshitani’s 20-card 12-Month Spread.) I also have zero experience with the Lenormand decks on which this Oracle deck seems to have been based, as interpretation relies heavily on juxtaposition, i.e. the meaning of a card is directly impacted by the others surrounding it.

So for me as a Lenormand newb, no matter how much I tried to understand the text of the guidebook, the act of interpretation was just too complicated. I even gamely tried the 36-card Grand Tableau spread described, and while I got some interesting information out of it, I just couldn’t figure out how to connect everything together into advice I could use. I freely accept that this is most likely a me-problem, and that is okay! Not everyone will connect with every Tarot or Oracle deck they meet, no matter how beautiful the imagery or sincere the message.

If you are into the message of this deck however, be prepared for an utterly gorgeous presentation, from the sturdy spot-glossed box, to the gilt-edged cards, to the glossy, full-color guidebook. Every component has a luxurious hand feel. This would make a terrific gift for any Lenormand enthusiast wanting to branch out, or for the thoughtful student a/o practitioner of the metaphysical. I am not yet there, alas, so it didn’t quite work for me.
