League Of The Lexicon: US Edition by Two Brothers Games

Word nerds, rejoice! If you ever wanted something like Trivial Pursuit, only dedicated to linguistics and requiring slightly less table space, then this is the game for you!

Considering the amount of money I’ve thrown at tabletop games on Kickstarter, I’m genuinely baffled that I didn’t notice this when it first came out on the crowdfunding platform in 2023. I’m super glad that the lovely people at Adams Media reached out to me tho, with the publication of the US Edition of this game.

Here are the basic rules: you play a member of the League Of The Lexicon, who’s in search of several artefacts to complete their collection. You gain an opportunity at claiming one of those artefacts every time you correctly answer a question from the deck. Once you collect five artefacts, or the equivalent, you win!

There are actually two quiz decks in the box, to make the game more accessible to all players. The larger deck is the Tricksy deck, written with word nerds like myself in mind. There’s also a Ticklish deck for those less confident of their abilities. While playing with my 14 year-old, I answered questions from Tricksy while he opted for Ticklish.

Until you get to endgame, you roll a die to determine which of five categories you’ll answer a question from (if you roll a 6, you got to choose!) The categories are Lexicon Master, Meaning & More, Usage & Abusage, Word Sauce and Wordly Wisdom. One question from each category is on the front of each card, with full answers on the back. These answers are genuinely informative, if not necessarily exhaustive. My kid and I have definitely argued over some of the “name ten words that” questions that are a staple of Lexicon Master (coincidentally, my least favorite category, tho I’ve found that it helps if you write down your answers so you’ll know if you’ve listed something already.)

The art and fonts throughout are impeccable. I loved the paper strips that held the decks together for shipment so much that I’ve refused to throw them out! I also enjoyed the commitment to diversity in the depiction of the League members, as well as the research sparked by the various artefacts. Let me tell you, I went down quite the rabbit hole regarding Madeleine de Scudery and how she inspired Hoffmann to write what might be the first piece of German crime fiction ever. The rule book is also surprisingly rich in variants and lore, with the quote from GB Shaw being perfection.

I’ve already recommended this game to my word nerd bestie, and think this would be a great purchase/gift for anyone who enjoys trivia a/o linguistics. Jms and I have both won one game apiece at this point, and will be going in for a tiebreaker soon! With holiday season and multiple excuses for gathering upcoming, this is a great game to have on hand to keep nearly everyone entertained.
